HICO Outing VOLUNTEER

Sign up for an outing planned by HICO Certified Leaders. Get Sierra Club background screening completed before your first outing. You will be responsible for hiking or camping with the group for the duration of the trip. You might also volunteer to help scout the location, pack or clean gear, help shop and pack food, pickup gear or return gear.

Administrative VOLUNTEER

In addition to outings, volunteers are needed to help with administrative tasks. Assistance needed may include volunteer recruiting, planning volunteer events, maintaining gear, updating social media, taking and posting meeting minutes, editing trip photos, maintaining the trip calendar, signing up outing volunteers.

Certified Leaders plan, organize and lead hiking, paddling, backpacking, and car camping outings, with the help of other ICO volunteers and in partnership with one of our partner agencies. Certified Leaders plan the trip itinerary, plan meals, purchase food, reserve vans, and manage the gear needed for each outing. Certified Leaders are also responsible for submitting trip participant reports and expense reports for each outing.

Fundraising Coordinator/grant writer

The Fundraising Coordinator/Grant Writer may:

  • Work with key ICO leadership (Chair/Treasurer) to develop annual group budget

  • Set annual fundraising goals to support ICO goals

  • Work with ICO Administrator/Sierra Club's Grants Team  to prepare grant applications, grant reports and all solicitations

  • Solicit in-kind donations as needed

  • Oversee local fundraising events

  • Keep ICO Administrator informed on all fund raising projects

  • Write "thank you" notes for all donations to maintain donor stewardship

  • Keep track of donations and follow-up reports

Other ways to be involved

To be a valuable asset to Harrisburg ICO, volunteers need not participate in outings. There is plenty of work to be done behind the scenes. If you are interested in learning more about serving in one of the following capacities, please indicate your interest on the application form. Administrative volunteers need to complete the same paperwork as volunteers who go on outings.
